Vampires and werewolves of folklore, history and fantasy ~
Vampires are the reanimated body of a dead person believed to come from the grave at night and drink the blood of living persons... The vampire of modern folklore is much more charming and charismatic than the bloated creatures in our ancient and medieval mythologies. Modern vampires are defined as slender and beautiful people who are abnormally pale in complexion and have a fatal reaction to sunlight.

The Transition
of Vampire Folklore
Although most of what we know about vampire lore comes from Europe, there are ancient records of them
from all around the world... As time went
on many different variations of the vampire tale developed. These would shape the myth
into what we know in the modern day. It wasn’t until 1819 that John Polidori
wrote‘The Vampyre.’ This work would redefine how we view the vampire legend. Instead of a horrid and bloated creature, Polidori transformed the vampire into a suave and charming beast of the night.
While this established the modern day vampire, it would not stand out in history as many look to Bram Stoker’s ‘Dracula’ for their favorite example. While ‘Dracula’ quickly
became the most famous vampire in history, it was not released until 1897 and many of Stoker’s ideas came from ‘The
Vampyre.’
Johann Heinrich Zopfius, wrote one of the most authoritative scholastic treatises on the undead, in a time when the fear of vampires was rampant, "Dissertation on the Vampire". Published in 1733, it is best known for this famous description: “The vampires, which issue forth from their graves at night, rush upon people sleeping in their beds, suck their blood and destroy them. They attack men, women and children, sparing neither age nor sex. People attacked by them complain of suffocation and a great interception of spirits; after which they soon die… Those who are killed by them, after death, become vampires…”
Werewolves from History
History? Yes! Legends of werewolves have haunted the wilderness of Europe since the Middle Ages and the origins of these stories go as far back as antiquity in world mythologies. No story comes as close to the terrifying reality of a werewolf (or werewolves) as the one that became known as the Beast of Gévaudan according to history, France's nightmare ~ "La Bête du Gévaudan" was a real wolf-like monster (or pack) that prowled the Auvergne and South Dordogne areas of France during the years 1764 to 1767, killing scores of people, often in bizarre circumstances.
These were the times of George Washington and the French and Indian wars
in the Americas and the Seven Years war in Europe. Every effort to
deal with the beast or beasts failed and it became nationally infamous.
The mysterious and gruesome killings created mass hysteria and eventually demanded the attention of the highest levels of the government, even
King Louis XV himself.
Descriptions of the time vary, but the beast was generally described as a wolf-like canine with a tall, lean frame capable of taking great strides. It had an elongated head similar to that of a greyhound, with a flattened snout, pointed ears, and a wide mouth sitting atop a broad chest. The Beast's tail was also said to have been notably longer than a wolf's, with a tuft at the end. The Beast's fur was described as tawny or russet in color but its back was streaked with black and a white heart-shaped pattern was noted on its underbelly. The number of victims differs according to the source. Research studies estimate there were more than 200 attacks, resulting in 113 deaths and 49 injuries and 98 of the victims killed were partly eaten. Other sources claim the animal or animals only killed between 60 and 100 adults and children and mauled more than 30. The Beast was reported killed several times before the attacks finally stopped. The Modern Werewolf Legends...
"The Werewolf Knight, from Arthurian Legend", "The Lycan and the Full Moon" and "The Big Bad Wolf" all MMXX
The werewolf mythos most of us are familiar with today was created in 20th century Hollywood by Curt Siodmak for the motion pictures using cherry-picked fragments of the medieval Vampire and shape shifter folklore... Siodmak, a German novelist established several werewolf "legends" — being marked by a pentagram; being practically immortal apart from being struck/shot by silver implements/bullets; and the famous verse: "Even a man who is pure in heart, And says his prayers by night May become a Wolf when the Wolfbane blooms, And the Moon is full and bright".
"The Eternal Struggle" , " Lycan Wolfpack" and "Battle of the Damned"
